Protected Peatlands: The Environmental Legacy of Magallanes

Pristine Patagonian Ecosystem

In the heart of Chilean Patagonia, peatlands (locally known as turberas) are more than just a resource; they are complex biological reactors vital for the planet's equilibrium. At our operation, we go far beyond local compliance to set a global benchmark in environmental guardianship.

1. Strict Compliance: Supreme Decree No. 25

Chilean legislation, specifically Supreme Decree No. 25 of the Ministry of Agriculture, provides the most robust framework for Sphagnum protection in the world. Every gram of moss we export is harvested under a rigorous Management Plan approved and audited by the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG).

2. Science-Based Non-Destructive Harvesting

We utilize a selective "top-cropping" approach. By manually harvesting only the living top section of the Sphagnum colony and leaving the regenerative base intact, we ensure that the ecosystem's hydrologic and thermal regulation functions continue without interruption.

3. Remote Surveillance and Monitoring

Sustainability is verified through data. We employ multi-spectral satellite analysis and periodic on-site biological audits to measure growth rates. This enables a dynamic harvest rotation system where areas are allowed to recover for years between interventions.

4. Carbon Sink Protection

Healthy peatlands are the earth's most efficient carbon lock-boxes. By rejecting drainage and industrial mechanization, we ensure that these vast reservoirs of organic carbon remain sequestered, contributing actively to climate change mitigation while providing premium products for the global market.
